Due to either negligence, or absentmindedness (or possibly a combination for both) I ended up leaving the dried fruit mixture soaked in alcohol, on my kitchen counter to marinate for (cough) 2 years. My mum who would show up twice during this time, would stick an educated finger in it, pronounce it ‘dry’, pour another bottle of brandy in it, and leave it alone.
